Damascus

Copy of an email. I just thought I’d put it up in case I dont have time to write about it for a while.

Hey everyone, I wanted to let you know that I made it to Syria (As Sham) All good in the hood. The border, which we were expecting to be waiting at for a minimum of 4-6 hours only took 2 and half hours, we flew through it. Only to have our taxi driver who after deciding a price to damascus told us he didnt know how to get there, so we went to a little town nearby and grabbed a super cramped with smelly men and dark bus to Damascus! It ended up being a lot cheaper than a cab so that works. We walked around the old city today and through the big souk with the tin roof still riddled with holes from when the french attacked. It is really amazing, this is definitely one of the coolest cities I have ever been in. It is what you would expect an arab cross roads city to look like, its so amazing, and all the old buildings which looked super cramped (2.000 year old cramped) open up to these amazing inner courtyards, with green leaves (thats a relief coming from the desert) and water fountains. Its really what you would expect Damascus to look like, same as it did 1,000 years ago, except sadly someone invented plastic bags and aluminium cans.
